VIX On Tour: Wagtail Bristol Sprint

By Catherine McDonough Damon Jagger

Wagtail Sprint

Here at VIX Digital, we decided to embrace Wagtail as our core offering around 6 months ago. We immediately fell in love and have been trying to improve our knowledge around Wagtail ever since.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the Bristol Sprint where we would have the opportunity to work on improving the CMS, the focus for the 3 day sprint was Editor Experience. Prior to the sprint we were presented with a list of some ideas around what the main focus areas for the 3 days would be.

The Sprint Goal

When we arrived at Torchbox’s Bristol Office (which is incredibly cool 👌 #officegoals) we clarified the key focus areas as a group and decided which areas we would all like to work on for the next few days.

We decided to focus on Editor Reports i.e allowing users to see more of the really useful data that is collected by wagtail which is currently hidden away behind the scenes. You can read more about the work we did towards Wagtail Reports in an upcoming blog post.

The structure for each day was pretty straightforward, intros in the morning over pastries and coffee, working with our teams during the day and then rounding the day off with a mini show and tell. During show and tell we shared the progress we had made and what we were hoping to achieve next. This was arguably the best part of each day, it was great to see the amazing results/improvements that everyone was able to come up with in such a short space of time.

Sharing Is Caring

As relatively new Wagtail adopters we haven’t contributed to core code before and we were quite anxious. This didn’t last for long, everyone was so welcoming and helpful that we were at ease straight away. Everyone was really happy to share their knowledge and help each other and it was a really great environment to learn new things - making us even more inspired/determined to become Wagtail ninjas.

It was a great opportunity to see some of the new features coming up in Wagtail 2.0 as well as see some of the great ways in which other teams are implementing wagtail for their clients - hats off to the guys at Hactar who are doing some amazing customisations to the editor 👏

The Bristol Sprint was an amazing experience. We learnt lots of new things, discovered a new city and we made new friends.

Big thanks to Torchbox for hosting and to everyone else for making it such an enjoyable few days.

Until next time!
