At VIX we are always striving to improve and learn, and we find the best way to do that is to critique our work.
After migrating our website to a CMS, we decided to see what we could do to improve on it.
We wanted real visibility of the quality of each section.
This helps us to gain a real insight into what we need to improve, what we think is missing and most importantly anything that we think is hindering the usability of the site.
Because we become so familiar with our website it can be easy to overlook where we can improve or where users might struggle.
We want to make sure any changes offered up by team members are positive, we aim to look for the things we can add, without highlighting whats missing.
This quickly becomes a positive approach to implementing change.

By printing off A3 sheets of each page of our website and sticking up on the wall, the team add their views taking a few minutes of their day to read through and look at the pages. Seeing your website off screen gives you a fresh perspective and can highlight where things could be improved.
We gather around the board, one by one we discuss our thoughts, a quick few words by each team member, explaining their notes and where they feel we could add value and then we decide where we would like to make changes and make a list of highest priority to the lowest.
This can be based on design, colour, text or links in the right place, by reflecting back on our user research, analytics and heat mapping we can back up our thoughts with real data.
Then we get to work, making slight changes that the whole team have worked together to decide.
As we grow, and continuously learn more, our website will constantly change, there will always be better techniques or trends to move towards.
Holding critiques enables the team to have total visibility and a voice on what they think in a quick 10 minute discussion.

Our next step is to turn the critique into actionable cards on our backlog, in readiness for sprint planning.
